The Parent Preparedness Theory

The Parent Preparedness Theory emphasizes a focus on the parents of children who repeatedly exhibit antisocial and delinquent behaviors in school. It places a specific emphasis on using a sociocultural approach with parents, while using a more humanistic approach with the child. This is done with the ultimate goal of isolating and identifying the needs of the parent, who may be ascribing personal frustrations onto the child.

Improving Parent Efficacy Together (IPET)

  • As a pediatric nurse at heart, part of my role was to advocate for children. The rubber met the road when I realized that parents in our school community were not having their basic needs met to the extent that they could respond to their children’s needs.

  • I realized that to continue my mission of advocating for children, attention had to be given to making a platform for building parent efficacy. IPET (Improving Parent Efficacy Together) was born. It is a 6-part course built on Shaw’s Parent Preparedness Theory (copyright 2019). Efficacy is “the ability to produce a desired or intended result”.
